Used for photography with infra-red films. Infra-red film is also sensitive to ultra-violet rays and shorter wavelengths ofthe visible spectrum so it is necessary filter out all but the infra-red rays.

Often used in crime detection, medical photography, detection of distibution of vegetation, etc.

In ordinary photography with infra-red film or infra-red colour film, an infra-red filter can also be used to change the contast or colour effect.
